Electricity demand in California is skyrocketing. Whether owing to the essential transition away from fossil-fueled transportation and buildings, or the voracious appetite of datacenters supporting artificial intelligence, demand is projected to increase by as much as 70% by 2040. As it currently stands, data center operators are investing in dangerous fossil gas and nuclear energy to meet the massive demand. Solar and wind plus storage have been deemed inadequate due to land use implications at the scale needed for projected demand.

But the good news is that, here in California, we literally sit atop another form of energy that offers an infinite supply, on a human timescale, of 24/7/365 clean energy with no need for storage. But we’re not talking about traditional geothermal energy. With recent advances in methods to explore and tap into “hot rocks” deeper in the Earth than conventional geothermal, so-called “Next Generation Geothermal” technology overcomes the limitations of conventional approaches, and could pair with other renewables to stabilize the grid, serve explosive demand growth, avoid harmful emissions, and even provide a viable job transition for oil field and refinery workers.
