<image:title>Chapter Events - Documentary Special Event: The Issue with Tissue - A Boreal Love Story - Make it stand out</image:title>
<image:caption>About the filmmaker: Michael Zelniker is a lifelong environmentalist with longtime memberships in NRDC, the Sierra Club, EDF, and Greenpeace. Born and raised in Montreal, he is an award-winning actor and filmmaker who, after more than 30 years of working on film, television, and theater stages around the world, and 14 years of training actors and filmmakers at the Los Angeles campuses of the New York Film Academy and AMDA College and Conservatory for the Performing Arts, left his teaching job to work full time as a volunteer on the climate crisis. Since being trained in 2018 by former Vice President Al Gore, Michael joined the Climate Reality Project’s Leadership Corps, served 2.5 years as Co-Chair of the Los Angeles chapter, and has mentored many climate leaders. With The Issue with Tissue - a boreal love story, Michael has returned to filmmaking, melding his passions for storytelling, film, and climate action. This film, which he wrote, produced and directed, is his documentary debut, and is in its early stages of release. Michael is also currently in pre-production on a second documentary about water and the women on the frontlines who are waging a courageous, inspiring fight to protect and conserve it.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - When Climate Change Denialism Drives Federal Policy — A Recipe for Disasters - Global climate models are computer programs that consist of several hundred thousand lines of code. They calculate the interactions between the ocean, atmosphere and land using factors such as water vapor, carbon dioxide, heat, and the Earth’s rotation as inputs. Climate models project climate (the average weather over a long period of time, e.g., a 30-year period), not weather (what an area experiences on an hourly or daily basis). Models help us understand how our actions can affect the future climate. They allow modelers to look at different scenarios of increased greenhouse gas emissions and see how those increases may affect the planet.</image:title>

Located in Manassas, Virginia, and Phoenix, Arizona, respectively, each supercomputer operates at a speed of 12.1 petaflops — three times faster than NOAA's former system. Pimentel had some direct connection to this grant as well. She told me that La Familia went through a competitive application process and rigorous evaluation steps. The organization had a strong funding track record and had been fundraising for many years for the project which would have converted an old school site into a climate resilience center.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - The Climate Safety Net: How Federal Climate Systems Quietly Support Local Resilience - OASES, the EPA agency replacing ORD, is slated to be housed within the Office of the new Trump-appointed EPA Administrator. This shift may sound purely bureaucratic on the surface, but critics fear the move is intended to compromise researchers’ independence and deprive OASES of the kind of fact-driven independence that puts the public interest before partisan political interests and the interests of big business.</image:title>
<image:caption>ORD, unlike the new OASES, was intentionally designed to be free from EPA’s policy-making offices and be kept out from under the EPA’s administrator — in order “to protect its scientists from direct managerial or political interference” (“The EPA’s shaken foundation,” Editorial in the Journal Science, 25 Sept, 2025).</image:caption>

That foresight relies on climate science, forecasting, and monitoring systems — many of which are supported by federal agencies such as NOAA, FEMA, EPA, and the Bureau of Reclamation.</image:title>

Now, climate change is intensifying these conditions. As a result, California wildfires are posing bigger threats today compared to past decades. <image:title>Blog - Local Industry Leaders As Climate Allies? What I Learned Attending CRBA’s Screening of Beyond Zero - Anderson launches what he calls Mission Zero, a commitment to eliminate waste, pollution, and the company’s overall environmental footprint by 2020. For a flooring manufacturer dependent on fossil fuels, this meant reimagining everything about how they operated. His goal, as he explained it, was to eventually run the company in a way that only relied on resources the Earth could naturally and quickly replenish.</image:title>
<image:caption>Watching the film, what struck me was how earnest and challenging this journey really was. Interface didn’t pretend it would be easy; they stumbled, debated, experimented, and kept going anyway. The innovations that eventually emerged — recycled materials, low-impact manufacturing, even carpet tiles designed to store carbon — felt like the natural result of a company that gets a high from being on the cutting edge while doing the unthinkable in the business world: holding itself to a very high level of accountability for the environment and the external costs of its business model.</image:caption>

<image:caption>One participating manufacturing facility replaced aging process motors, added variable-frequency drives (VFDs) and switched to a clean electrical boiler to serve a refrigerated line. The project cut annual energy consumption by roughly 15 % and lowered greenhouse-gas emissions by thousands of metric tons of CO₂-equivalent. Because the grant covered up to 85% of equipment cost, the business avoided major upfront risk and gained long-term savings while staying competitive, and the outcome was also a model for reducing carbon emissions statewide. <image:title>Blog - Seizing the Mantle in 2025: Turning Climate Setbacks Into Climate Action - 1. Beyond Zero & Building Electrification in San Francisco The film Beyond Zero tells the story of a carpet company that reinvented itself around sustainability, showing that change is possible even in unexpected industries. It makes us wonder: what would it look like if San Francisco’s business community made similar commitments to sustainability? In particular, that community could seize the moment to accelerate the electrification of commercial buildings. Since 2024 SF has made progress reducing processing time for both planning and building permits, and in July 2025, passed an ambitious All-Electric Major Renovations Ordinance. And, research tells us that building infrastructure contributes significantly to the city’s carbon footprint. Can the Bay Area demonstrate that clean energy buildings aren’t just good for the climate, but good for resilience and business too? This campaign uses the film Beyond Zero to spark conversations with business and civic leaders, with a focus on ramping up building renovations to reduce carbon emissions.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - Seizing the Mantle in 2025: Turning Climate Setbacks Into Climate Action - 2. Stopping the Montezuma Carbon Capture Pipeline What does it mean to put a carbon pipeline through wetlands? That’s the proposal in Solano County, where Montezuma Carbon LLC is pushing to get approval to build a carbon sequestration facility in sensitive wetlands near Suisun Marsh in Solano County. It raises tough questions about risk, justice, and whether carbon capture is really a “solution” at all. Should our communities be the testing ground for an experiment with so many uncertainties? The good news is that the CACTI coalition is already spearheading efforts to raise awareness about these dangers and get local leaders and commissions to reject the proposed project. CRBA wants to support CACTI and educate and mobilize more community members before it’s too late.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - Seizing the Mantle in 2025: Turning Climate Setbacks Into Climate Action - 3. Local Impact of Federal Cuts to Climate Science Cuts to NOAA and federal climate research might feel distant, but what happens when fewer resources are available to track fires, floods, and extreme weather in California? Bay Area scientists have warned that cuts to NOAA and to NOAA’s research budget will likely undermine local disaster preparedness, even as risks from climate events are intensifying. We’ve already seen tragic consequences in places like Texas, where reduced monitoring meant less warning before deadly flooding. What could these cuts mean for our region’s preparedness? How can we make sure reliable science continues to inform local action? How should we focus our advocacy to make sure our communities and leaders are using reliable models and preparing for potential hazards?</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - Seizing the Mantle in 2025: Turning Climate Setbacks Into Climate Action - 4. The Impact of AI Data Centers on Energy Demand Artificial Intelligence is often talked about in terms of jobs, innovation, or ethics — but what about energy use? AI data centers are consuming electricity at staggering levels, sometimes more than entire cities. If this trend continues, what does that mean for our grid, for utility bills, and for communities already vulnerable to outages? Our campaign is about lifting up these questions and helping Bay Area residents understand both the risks and opportunities.</image:title>

From the poetry of Walt Whitman and the photography of Ansel Adams to countless other painters, photographers, and writers, there is a boundless kinship between nature, human experience, and human culture.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - What Is Environmentalism — And Why Does It Matter? - A healthy forest isn’t just a bunch of trees — it’s a living network of soil microbes, insects, birds, fungi, mammals, rainfall patterns, and more. When one part of that system is disrupted by human activity or encroachments — by deforestation, pollution, or climate change— the entire ecosystem can suffer. Rachel Carson, an American scientist and pioneering environmentalist from the 1960s, who ignited the modern environmental movement with her groundbreaking book Silent Spring, summed up the core insight of ecology in five simple words: “In nature nothing exists alone.”</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - Toxic City: A Must-Read for Anyone Committed to Climate Justice - In this blog post, CRBA activist Dave Rhody explores the compelling themes presented in the book Toxic City: Redevelopment and Environmental Justice in San Francisco by Lindsey Dillon. Dillon, a critical human geographer and Assistant Professor of Sociology at UC Santa Cruz, sheds light on a long history of environmental injustice afflicting Bayview-Hunters Point — a community on the margins of the glittering skylines, majestic bridges, and green spaces San Francisco is famous for. We hope you enjoy this preview of Dillon's inclusive account of contamination and systemic neglect in Bayview-Hunters Point along with the book’s homage to the resilient community activists fighting for environmental justice.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - For Your Climate Activism Bookshelf - Greta Thunberg’s The Climate Book is not just a comprehensive guide to understanding the climate crisis—it’s a powerful manifesto for action. The book’s scope covers nearly every aspect of climate science, policy, and activism, making it an immensely educational resource. At the same time, each topic is treated in a short-standalone article, so all of the information is accessible and easy to digest, especially for those seeking a strong foundation on climate issues and science.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - For Your Climate Activism Bookshelf - What makes this book particularly compelling is Saito’s willingness to confront the elephant in the room of first-world societies, namely that our current economic systems are driving us toward ecological disaster. His call for a degrowth economy is not just theoretical—it’s a call to rethink our values and priorities in a world facing unprecedented challenges.</image:title>
<image:caption>While some might find his vision daunting or even impractical, Saito’s work is essential reading for anyone willing to consider the underlying economic and lifestyle changes needed to address the climate crisis. His perspective forces us to ask whether the solutions we’re pursuing are merely band-aids on a system that needs a complete overhaul.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - For Your Climate Activism Bookshelf - Brief Summary</image:title>
<image:caption>In Doughnut Economics, Kate Raworth critiques traditional economic theories that prioritize growth at the expense of social and environmental health. She proposes a new model—visualized as a doughnut—that balances essential human needs within the planet's ecological limits.</image:caption>
    </image:image>

      <image:title>Blog - For Your Climate Activism Bookshelf</image:title>
<image:caption>What makes Raworth’s approach particularly compelling is her ability to translate complex economic theories into accessible ideas that resonate with our contemporary values of social justice and sustainability. From those in academia to activists and advocates, Raworth urges us to rethink economics, critiquing the idea that economics should be pursued as a value-neutral science. Instead, Raworth argues that economic models need more pragmatic and purpose-driven goals like equity, well-being, and ecological balance.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - For Your Climate Activism Bookshelf - Cobalt Red by Siddhartha Kara is a gut-wrenching exploration of the human and environmental costs behind the cobalt mining industry in the Congo—a vital component of our modern technological world, and, paradoxically, one crucial to the production of EV batteries in the first world’s pursuit of carbon reductions.</image:title>
<image:caption>Kara, a seasoned expert on human trafficking and modern slavery, exposes the brutal realities faced by those at the bottom of the global supply chain. From the very beginning of the book, Kara dismantles the myths perpetuated by multinational corporations that claim their supply chains are clean and ethically sourced. The truth, as Kara reveals, is far darker: unregulated mining practices, child labor, and virtual slavery are the norm in regions rich in cobalt but impoverished in every other way.</image:caption>
